How DateMath finds a half birthday
DateMath adds 6 calendar months to the date of birth, then whole years, so the half birthday keeps the day number of the birthday: born November 17, the half birthday is May 17 every year. When the month 6 months on is shorter, it takes that month's last day, so a birthday on August 31 has its half birthday on February 28, or 29 in a leap year, and one on March 31 on September 30. Quarter and three-quarter birthdays are 3 and 9 months after the birthday, worked out the same way.
- The Gregorian calendar. DateMath treats every date as a Gregorian date, with its leap-year rule: a year divisible by 4 is a leap year, except century years not divisible by 400, so 2000 had a February 29 and 2100 will not. Source: Gregorian calendar.
DateMath's date math is tested against more than 100 cases worked out by hand. Every worked example and table on the site is computed with the same code the calculators run, so a page and its calculator can't disagree.
When is my half birthday?
Your half birthday is the day you are exactly half a year older than on your birthday: 6 calendar months after it, on the same day number. Born on November 17, your half birthday is May 17 every year. The calculator works out what’s my half birthday from a date of birth, with the weekday it falls on and the days until it, and answers when is your half birthday for anyone else just as quickly.
The method, step by step
Born November 17, 1990, counting from January 1, 2027:
- Add 6 months to the birth month: November + 6 months is May.
- Keep the day number: the half birthday is May 17.
- Take the first May 17 on or after the date you count from: Monday, May 17, 2027, when the age turns 36½.
- Count the days: 136 days from January 1, 2027.
DateMath adds the months to the date of birth itself every year, so a month end never drifts: the half birthday of August 31 is February 29 in a leap year and February 28 in the others.

Half birthday chart by month
Find your birth month and read across: the second column gives the half birthday of the 15th, and every other day number works the same way. The third column gives the last day of the month, where the shorter month 6 months on moves the half birthday to its own last day.
| Born in | Born on the 15th | Born on the last day |
|---|---|---|
| January | July 15 | January 31 → July 31 |
| February | August 15 | February 29 → August 29 |
| March | September 15 | March 31 → September 30 |
| April | October 15 | April 30 → October 30 |
| May | November 15 | May 31 → November 30 |
| June | December 15 | June 30 → December 30 |
| July | January 15 | July 31 → January 31 |
| August | February 15 | August 31 → February 28, or 29 in a leap year |
| September | March 15 | September 30 → March 30 |
| October | April 15 | October 31 → April 30 |
| November | May 15 | November 30 → May 30 |

Is a half birthday 6 months or 182 days?
Six calendar months, in DateMath’s count and in most people’s. A birthday year has 365 or 366 days, so its exact middle is 182 or 183 days after the birthday, while 6 calendar months is 181 to 184 days depending on the months in between. The two answers are often the same day and never more than a few days apart:
| Birthday | 6 calendar months later | Middle of the year in days |
|---|---|---|
| January 10, 2026 | July 10, 2026 (181 days) | July 11, 2026 (182 days) |
| March 31, 2026 | September 30, 2026 (183 days) | September 29, 2026 (182 days) |
| August 31, 2026 | February 28, 2027 (181 days) | March 1, 2027 (182 days) |
| September 5, 2027 | March 5, 2028 (182 days) | March 6, 2028 (183 days) |
| December 20, 2027 | June 20, 2028 (183 days) | June 20, 2028 (183 days) |
For a half birthday counted in days, add 182 days to the birthday in the date calculator.
Quarter birthdays and the 9¾ birthday
The same rule gives the other fractions of a year: a quarter birthday calculator adds 3 months to the birthday and a three-quarter birthday 9 months. Born July 31, 2017, the next quarter birthday after January 1, 2027 is October 31, 2027 (Sunday), turning 10¼, in 303 days, and the next three-quarter birthday April 30, 2027 (Friday), turning 9¾, in 119 days.
That last one is the 9¾ birthday calculator answer for this child, the day a reader of Harry Potter might mark after Platform 9¾. For anyone else, enter the date of birth and pick a date after their 9th birthday, such as the 9th birthday itself, as the date to count from.
When people celebrate half birthdays
- Birthdays near the holidays. A birthday close to Christmas or New Year gets its own day in June or July.
- Summer birthdays. Children born in July or August often celebrate at school on the half birthday, when classmates are around.
- Babies. The 6-month mark is the first milestone parents photograph; the age calculator gives the age in months and weeks too.
- Couples. A half-year mark of a relationship is a monthly anniversary: the anniversary calculator gives it, with the 100th and 1,000th days.
For a countdown to the day, enter the half birthday in the day countdown and tick “Every year”. February 29 birthdays follow the rule of the age calculator, and the leap year calculator counts their real birthdays; for other special birthdays, see the golden birthday calculator.
Frequently asked questions
- When is my half birthday?
- Six months after your birthday, on the same day number: born on November 17, your half birthday is May 17 every year. Enter your date of birth and the calculator gives the next one, with its weekday and the days until it.
- How do I calculate a half birthday?
- Add 6 to the month of your birthday and keep the day; if the month passes December, subtract 12. Born on October 5 (month 10), 10 + 6 = 16, which is month 4, so the half birthday is April 5. When that month has no such day, take its last day.
- What is the half birthday of someone born on August 31?
- February 28, or February 29 in a leap year. February has no 30th or 31st, so 6 months after August 31 is the last day of February, the same rule spreadsheets use when adding months. A birthday on March 31 has its half birthday on September 30.
- Is a half birthday exactly half a year in days?
- Close, but not always to the day. A year has 365 or 366 days, so its middle is 182 or 183 days after the birthday, while 6 calendar months is 181 to 184 days. The calculator uses calendar months, the way half birthdays are usually counted, and the page shows the midpoint in days too.
- What is a quarter birthday?
- The day 3 months after your birthday, when you are a quarter of a year older, such as 7¼. The three-quarter birthday is 9 months after the birthday. The calculator gives the next of each under the half birthday.
- When is my 9¾ birthday?
- 9 years and 9 months after your date of birth, on your three-quarter birthday in the year you are 9: born on July 31, 2017, it is April 30, 2027, because April has no 31st. Pick a date shortly before it as the date to count from, and the three-quarter birthday line shows it.
- What if my birthday is in the first half of the year?
- It works the same way: the half birthday falls in the second half. Born on February 10, your half birthday is August 10; born on June 30, it is December 30.
- Do people celebrate half birthdays?
- Some do, especially when the birthday falls near a holiday such as Christmas, or in the summer break when school classmates are away. A half birthday moves the party to the other side of the year.
