How DateMath finds the day of the week
DateMath counts the days from a fixed date to yours in the Gregorian calendar and takes the remainder after whole weeks, so every date in the years 1 to 9999 gets its weekday, leap days included. The same date is then numbered both ways: in the US, Sunday is day 1 of the week; in ISO 8601, Monday is day 1 and Sunday day 7. Today and tomorrow come from your device's date.
- The Gregorian calendar. DateMath treats every date as a Gregorian date, with its leap-year rule: a year divisible by 4 is a leap year, except century years not divisible by 400, so 2000 had a February 29 and 2100 will not. Source: Gregorian calendar.
- ISO 8601 week dates. DateMath numbers weeks by ISO 8601: weeks start on Monday, week 1 is the week with the year's first Thursday, and a year has 52 or 53 weeks. Source: ISO 8601.
DateMath's date math is tested against more than 100 cases worked out by hand. Every worked example and table on the site is computed with the same code the calculators run, so a page and its calculator can't disagree.
What day of the week is it today?
The first line of the calculator answers it: today's weekday and date, read from your device, with the day of the year and how many days are left. The line under it is tomorrow's weekday and date. Because the answer comes from your own clock, it changes at your midnight, and someone in another time zone can be on a different day for a few hours.
The same line answers “how many days so far this year”: day 1 is January 1, so on day 299 of a 365-day year, 298 days have passed and 66 are left after today. For any other date, pick it in the date field.
What is the first day of the week: Sunday or Monday?
Sunday is the first day of the week on US calendars, and Monday is the first day under ISO 8601, the international standard for dates. Both are in everyday use, so “the 1st day of the week” and “the last day of the week” depend on which calendar you read:
- US calendars run from Sunday to Saturday: Sunday is day 1, Saturday the 7th and last day.
- ISO 8601 runs from Monday to Sunday: Monday is day 1, Sunday the 7th and last day. ISO week numbers, most of Europe and many business calendars use it.
The Sunday start is older. In the Jewish and Christian week the Sabbath, Saturday, is the seventh day, which makes Sunday the first: Hebrew still calls Sunday “yom rishon”, the first day, and Portuguese calls Monday “segunda-feira”, the second day. ISO 8601 starts the week on Monday so that the working week and the weekend stay in one numbered week.
| Day | US calendar | ISO 8601 | Excel WEEKDAY(date) | JavaScript getDay() |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday | 1 | 7 | 1 | 0 |
| Monday | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
| Tuesday | 3 | 2 | 3 | 2 |
| Wednesday | 4 | 3 | 4 | 3 |
| Thursday | 5 | 4 | 5 | 4 |
| Friday | 6 | 5 | 6 | 5 |
| Saturday | 7 | 6 | 7 | 6 |
Excel's WEEKDAY(date, 2) returns the ISO numbers instead, and Python's isoweekday() does too, while its weekday() counts Monday as 0. So is Saturday the last day of the week? On a US calendar, yes; in ISO 8601, Sunday is.
What day of the week is the 1st of each month in 2026 and 2027?
The weekday of the first day of every month, for planning a month ahead. Any other day of the month follows from it: the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th fall on the same weekday as the 1st.
| Month | 1st, 2026 | 1st, 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| January | Thursday | Friday |
| February | Sunday | Monday |
| March | Sunday | Monday |
| April | Wednesday | Thursday |
| May | Friday | Saturday |
| June | Monday | Tuesday |
| July | Wednesday | Thursday |
| August | Saturday | Sunday |
| September | Tuesday | Wednesday |
| October | Thursday | Friday |
| November | Sunday | Monday |
| December | Tuesday | Wednesday |
What day of the week was it? Dates in history
Each of these dates has a page of its own, with the answer, the month's calendar and how to work the weekday out by hand:
| Date | Weekday |
|---|---|
| July 4, 1776 | Thursday |
| December 7, 1941 | Sunday |
| June 6, 1944 | Tuesday |
| November 22, 1963 | Friday |
| July 20, 1969 | Sunday |
| January 28, 1986 | Tuesday |
| September 11, 2001 | Tuesday |
| July 4, 2026 | Saturday |
| August 16, 1977 (Elvis Presley died) | Tuesday |
| January 26, 2020 (Kobe Bryant died) | Sunday |
How to calculate the day of the week from a date
DateMath counts days, but by hand the quickest exact method is Zeller's congruence. It adds up a few numbers taken from the date and keeps the remainder after dividing by 7. Take July 4, 2027:
- Write the day (q = 4) and the month as a number from 3 for March to 14 for February (m = 7). January and February count as months 13 and 14 of the year before.
- Split the year into the year of the century (K = 27) and the century (J = 20).
- Add q + ⌊13 × (m + 1) ÷ 5⌋ + K + ⌊K ÷ 4⌋ + ⌊J ÷ 4⌋ + 5 × J = 4 + 20 + 27 + 6 + 5 + 100 = 162.
- Divide by 7 and keep the remainder: 162 = 7 × 23 + 1. The remainder counts from Saturday: 0 is Saturday, 1 Sunday, 2 Monday and so on to 6 for Friday.
- 1 is Sunday, so July 4, 2027 is a Sunday.
A shortcut for nearby dates: a date moves one weekday later each year and two after a February 29, so if your birthday is a Friday this year, it is a Saturday next year unless a leap day comes first.
What day of the week were you born on?
Enter your date of birth in the calculator and it shows the weekday, with the day of the year you were born on. To see your exact age, the total days you have lived and the weekday of your next birthday, use the age calculator, which also shows the weekday of birth. For a February 29 birthday, the leap year calculator counts the real birthdays.
How to write the day of the week and the date
In US English the weekday comes first, followed by a comma, then the month, the day and the year: Sunday, July 4, 2027. In the middle of a sentence a comma also follows the year. Short forms abbreviate both (Sun., Jul. 4, 2027), and ISO 8601 writes the date as 2027-07-04, usually without the weekday.
For more about the weeks themselves, the week number calculator gives the ISO and US week of any date, and the printable calendar shows whole months and years with their weekdays.
Frequently asked questions
- What day of the week is it today?
- The line at the top of the calculator says it, with today's date, the day of the year and the week number, read from your device. Tomorrow's weekday and date are on the line below it.
- What is the first day of the week?
- Sunday on US calendars, and Monday under the international standard ISO 8601. US wall calendars, Excel's WEEKDAY function and most US apps start the week on Sunday; ISO 8601, most of Europe and ISO week numbers start it on Monday. The calculator gives both weekday numbers for every date.
- Is Sunday the first or last day of the week?
- Both, depending on the system: Sunday is the first day on US calendars and the last day, day 7, in ISO 8601. So "the end of the week" can mean Saturday in the US and Sunday on a European calendar.
- Why is Sunday the first day of the week in the US?
- Because US calendars keep the order of the Jewish and Christian week, in which the Sabbath, Saturday, is the seventh day, so Sunday is the first. Hebrew calls Sunday "yom rishon", the first day, and Portuguese calls Monday "segunda-feira", the second day, for the same reason. ISO 8601 moved the start to Monday for business and week numbering.
- What is the 7th day of the week?
- Saturday on a US calendar, where Sunday is day 1, and Sunday in ISO 8601, where Monday is day 1. The 1st day is Sunday in the US and Monday in ISO 8601.
- How do I find the day of the week I was born?
- Enter your date of birth in the date field: the weekday shows at once. The age calculator also shows it, beside your exact age and next birthday.
- How do I calculate the day of the week by hand?
- Use Zeller's congruence: add the day, ⌊13 × (month + 1) ÷ 5⌋, the year of the century, a quarter of it, a quarter of the century and 5 times the century, then take the remainder after dividing by 7 (0 = Saturday, 1 = Sunday). January and February count as months 13 and 14 of the year before. The worked example on this page goes through one date step by step.
- How many days are left in the year?
- The "Day of the year" line shows it for any date: for today it is at the top of the calculator, as "day N of 365, so many days left". A common year has 365 days and a leap year 366, so December 31 is day 365 or 366.
- How do I write the day of the week and the date?
- In US English the weekday comes first, then a comma: Monday, October 26, 2026, or Mon., Oct. 26, 2026 when it is short. ISO 8601 writes the date as 2026-10-26 and leaves the weekday out, or uses the week date 2026-W44-1, where 1 is Monday.
- Does the calculator work for dates before 1582?
- Yes, but in the Gregorian calendar extended backward (the proleptic Gregorian calendar), as ISO 8601 does. Records from before a country switched calendars are written in the Julian calendar, so convert such a date first with the Julian date converter, then look up its weekday.
