Graduation Year Calculator
Find the year a child graduates from high school from their date of birth: the class year, the fall they start kindergarten and the grade they are in this school year. Schools go by the age on a cutoff date, September 1 here by default, which differs by state and district, so enter yours.

How DateMath works out a graduation year
DateMath takes the first fall in which the child is 5 years old on or before the cutoff date as the kindergarten year. A cutoff from July to December falls in that fall: born on or before the cutoff's month and day, kindergarten starts the fall of the year they turn 5; born after it, the year after. A cutoff from January to June falls in the spring of the same school year, such as January 1, 2027 for the 2026–27 year: born on or before it, kindergarten starts the fall before the year they turn 5; born after it, the fall of that year. Kindergarten and grades 1 to 12 make 13 school years, so the class graduates in the spring 13 years after kindergarten starts. A school year is counted from July 1 to June 30, so the grade changes on July 1.
- The Gregorian calendar. DateMath treats every date as a Gregorian date, with its leap-year rule: a year divisible by 4 is a leap year, except century years not divisible by 400, so 2000 had a February 29 and 2100 will not. Source: Gregorian calendar.
DateMath's date math is tested against more than 100 cases worked out by hand. Every worked example and table on the site is computed with the same code the calculators run, so a page and its calculator can't disagree.
What year will my child graduate? Graduation year by birthday
A child graduates from high school 13 school years after starting kindergarten: kindergarten plus grades 1 to 12. And kindergarten starts in the first fall when the child is 5 by the school’s cutoff date. So the graduation calculator by birthday needs two things, the date of birth and the cutoff, and gives the class year, the fall kindergarten starts and the grade on any date.
The method, step by step
Born October 14, 2019, with a September 1 cutoff:
- Compare the birthday with the cutoff: October 14 comes after September 1, so the child is still 4 on the cutoff in 2024.
- Kindergarten starts the next fall, when the child is 5 on the cutoff: fall 2025.
- Add 13 school years: kindergarten in 2025–26, 12th grade in 2037–38, so the class of 2038.
Born on or before September 1 the same year, the child would have started a year earlier and be in the class of 2037. DateMath counts a birthday on the cutoff day itself as in time.

High school class year by birth year
With a September 1 cutoff, everyone born from January 1 to September 1 of a year is in one class, and everyone born from September 2 to December 31 in the next. The grade is the one for 2026–27 on an on-time path.

Every school year from kindergarten to graduation
For the child born October 14, 2019, on time, the school years run:
| Grade | School year |
|---|---|
| Kindergarten | 2025–26 |
| 1st grade | 2026–27 |
| 2nd grade | 2027–28 |
| 3rd grade | 2028–29 |

| 10th grade | 2035–36 |
| 11th grade | 2036–37 |
| 12th grade | 2037–38 |
High school, grades 9 to 12, starts in fall 2034. A four-year college degree started right after it is the college class of 2042.
Why the cutoff date changes the answer
Kindergarten cutoff dates differ by state, and some states leave the date to each district, so a child born in the fall can be in different classes in two places. DateMath doesn’t keep a state table: check your school district’s rule and enter its date. For a child born September 15, 2020:
| Cutoff (age 5 by) | Kindergarten | Class of |
|---|---|---|
| August 1 | Fall 2026 | 2039 |
| September 1 | Fall 2026 | 2039 |
| September 30 | Fall 2025 | 2038 |
| October 15 | Fall 2025 | 2038 |
| December 31 | Fall 2025 | 2038 |
| January 1 (of the school year) | Fall 2025 | 2038 |
A cutoff from January to June falls in the spring of the school year, after kindergarten has started: with “5 on or before January 1,” the 2026–27 kindergarten class is the children who turn 5 by January 1, 2027. A child born in the fall can then start kindergarten at 4, a few months before the 5th birthday, and the calculator counts any cutoff in those months that way.
Early entry, redshirting and repeated grades
The calculator gives the on-time path. A child who starts kindergarten a year late, which is often called redshirting, graduates a year later; one who skips a grade or starts early through a district’s early entry rule, a year sooner. A school year is counted from July 1 to June 30 here, so the grade line moves up on July 1.
When the graduation year comes up
- Enrolling a child. The kindergarten year tells you when to register; the age calculator gives the exact age on the cutoff.
- Youth sports and camps. Teams that group players by graduation year rather than age use the class year.
- Reunions and yearbooks. The class year of someone born in a given year, on the usual path.
- Counting down. Looking for a graduation date calculator? The class year gives the spring of graduation; the day itself is the school’s to set, so put it in the day countdown when the school announces it; ceremonies are usually in May or June.
Frequently asked questions
- What year will my child graduate high school?
- 13 years after the fall they start kindergarten, which for an on-time start is the year they turn 18 or 19. With a September 1 cutoff, a child born on or before September 1 graduates in the spring of the year they turn 18, and one born after it the year they turn 19. Enter the date of birth for the exact class year.
- What is a kindergarten cutoff date?
- The date by which a child must have turned 5 to start kindergarten that fall. The calculator starts with September 1, but states and some districts set their own dates, so check your school district's rule and enter it.
- What if my child's birthday is on the cutoff date?
- They turn 5 on the cutoff date, so they are 5 by then and can start kindergarten that fall. The calculator counts a birthday on the cutoff day as in time, as a rule worded "5 years old on or before September 1" does.
- What grade should my child be in?
- Enter the date of birth and today's date: the "Grade" line gives the grade for the current school year, counted from an on-time kindergarten start. A child who started a year early or late, or repeated or skipped a grade, is a year off from it.
- What class year is a child born in 2010?
- With a September 1 cutoff, the class of 2028 if born from January 1 to September 1, 2010, and the class of 2029 if born from September 2 to December 31. The table on this page gives every birth year from 2005 to 2024.
- How do I find my graduation year from college?
- Add 4 years to the high school class year for a four-year bachelor's degree started right after high school: the high school class of 2030 is the college class of 2034. The calculator shows this as the usual college class.
- Does the calculator know my state's cutoff?
- No, it keeps no state table, because cutoff dates differ by state, some states let districts choose, and rules change. Enter your district's date; the result follows from it.
- What is redshirting in kindergarten?
- Holding a child back a year, usually one with a birthday near the cutoff, so they start kindergarten at 6 instead of 5. They then graduate one year later than the calculator shows for an on-time start.
