How DateMath counts an anniversary

DateMath counts the whole years since the start date, then the whole months since the last anniversary, then the days left over, the way an age is counted. Anniversaries keep the day number of the start date: a wedding on February 29 has its anniversary on February 28 in common years, and a relationship that started on the 31st has its monthly anniversary on the last day of shorter months. Day milestones count the start date as day 0, so the 100th day is 100 days after it.

  • The Gregorian calendar. DateMath treats every date as a Gregorian date, with its leap-year rule: a year divisible by 4 is a leap year, except century years not divisible by 400, so 2000 had a February 29 and 2100 will not. Source: Gregorian calendar.

DateMath's date math is tested against more than 100 cases worked out by hand. Every worked example and table on the site is computed with the same code the calculators run, so a page and its calculator can't disagree.

How long have we been together? The anniversary calculator

The anniversary calculator counts the time from a start date to today, or to any other date: a wedding for a wedding anniversary calculator or marriage anniversary calculator, the day you got together for a dating or relationship anniversary, or a first day at work for a work anniversary. It answers in years, months and days, as the relationship duration calculator people search for, and in total months, weeks and days. Then, as an anniversary date calculator, it gives the next anniversary date with the years it marks.

The method, step by step

Married June 18, 2016, on January 1, 2027:

  1. Count the whole years: the last anniversary was June 18, 2026, so 10 years.
  2. Count the whole months since then: up to December 18, 2026 is 6 months.
  3. Count the days left: 14 days, so together 10 years, 6 months, 14 days, or 3,849 days.
  4. The next anniversary is the 11th, on Friday, June 18, 2027, in 168 days: the steel anniversary in the traditional list.

Monthly anniversaries: when is my one month or 6 month anniversary?

A monthly anniversary falls on the same day of the month as the day you got together. The anniversary month calculator adds whole months to the start date, so a one month anniversary is the same day next month and a 6 month anniversary the same day 6 months on. When the month is shorter, it takes the month’s last day. For a couple together since January 31, 2026:

Monthly anniversaries from January 31, 2026
AnniversaryDateDays together
1 monthSaturday, February 28, 202628 days
2 monthsTuesday, March 31, 202659 days
3 monthsThursday, April 30, 202689 days
6 monthsFriday, July 31, 2026181 days
9 monthsSaturday, October 31, 2026273 days
1 yearSunday, January 31, 2027365 days

Each one is counted from the start date, never from the month before, so after a February the dates go back to the 31st or the month’s last day.

100 days, 1,000 days and other milestones

Day milestones count the start date as day 0, so the 100th day is 100 days after it. From June 1, 2025:

Day milestones from June 1, 2025
MilestoneDateYears, months, days
100 daysTuesday, September 9, 20253 months, 8 days
500 daysWednesday, October 14, 20261 year, 4 months, 13 days
1,000 daysSaturday, February 26, 20282 years, 8 months, 25 days
5,000 daysTuesday, February 8, 203913 years, 8 months, 7 days
10,000 daysThursday, October 17, 205227 years, 4 months, 16 days

The calculator lists the same milestones for your own date and says which have passed. For any other number of days, add it to the start date in the date calculator.

Traditional wedding anniversary names by year

The calculator names the anniversary from the traditional US list, as given in Wikipedia’s Wedding anniversary article. The lists differ by country and between traditional and modern versions, so treat the name as a custom, not a rule.

Leap day weddings and work anniversaries

Married on February 29

DateMath puts a February 29 anniversary on February 28 in common years, so it stays in February, the rule the age calculator uses for birthdays. Married February 29, 2024, the 1st anniversary is February 28, 2025 (Friday), passed 1 year ago, and the real date returns in 2028. The leap year calculator explains the rule.

Work anniversary calculator

Choose Work and enter your first day: the result is your length of service in years, months and days. Started March 4, 2019, on January 1, 2027 that is 7 years, 9 months, 28 days, and the next work anniversary is March 4, 2027 (Thursday), in 62 days. Benefits and leave follow your employer’s own rules for counting service, so check those.

Counting down to the next anniversary

For a live countdown, enter the wedding or start date in the day countdown, name it and tick “Every year”: it counts to the next anniversary and moves on after each one. The half birthday and golden birthday calculators find other dates worth marking.

Frequently asked questions

How long have we been married?
Count the whole years since your wedding date, then the whole months since your last anniversary, then the days left over. Enter the wedding date and the calculator gives all three, with the total days, weeks and months below.
Which anniversary is it this year?
The year you are in minus the year you married, once the date has come: married in 2016, your 2027 anniversary is the 11th. The "Next anniversary" line names the number, the weekday and the traditional name, such as tin for the 10th.
When is our monthly anniversary?
On the same day of each month as the day you got together: together since March 14, it is the 14th of every month. Started on the 31st, it falls on the last day of shorter months, such as April 30. The calculator shows the next one and which month it is, so the 6th month falls 6 months after the start.
When is our 1,000-day anniversary?
1,000 days after the start date, about 2 years and 9 months: together since June 1, 2025, it is February 26, 2028. The milestones list in the calculator gives the 100th, 500th, 1,000th, 5,000th and 10,000th day with their dates.
What are the traditional anniversary gifts by year?
In the traditional US list: paper for the 1st, cotton for the 2nd, leather for the 3rd, wood for the 5th, tin or aluminum for the 10th, crystal for the 15th, china for the 20th, silver for the 25th, ruby for the 40th, gold for the 50th and diamond for the 60th. The table on this page gives the list, which differs by country.
How do I calculate a work anniversary?
Choose "Work" and enter your first day: the calculator gives your years of service in years, months and days and the date of the next work anniversary. Your employer's rules decide what counts for benefits, such as leave or unpaid time, so check those before relying on the date.
How many days have we been together?
The "Total days" line counts the days from the start date to today, February 29s included, with the start date as day 0. The same span is shown in weeks and in whole months.
What if we married on February 29?
In common years, the calculator puts your anniversary on February 28, so it stays in February; the real date returns every leap year. Couples choose either February 28 or March 1, the same choice people born on February 29 make for their birthday.
